” (Migration) is a multi-chapter soundscape composition created by GUI Ren as part of the Walk in Her Shoes project in Hong Kong. Developed from long-term field research and participatory sound practices, the piece offers a personal retelling of the auditory experiences of Chinese female new immigrants living in Hong Kong.

The work combines field recordings made by both the artist and participants, original vocals, electronic music, and compositional elements drawn from the sound of the pipa, a traditional Chinese lute. The pipa motif serves as a key sonic reference, rooted in the artist’s own memory of hearing a pipa player regularly practicing near her former living place in Beijing. This remembered sound becomes a point of departure for dialogues—with place, with participants, and with her own identity as a newly arrived outsider in Hong Kong.

Structured in four chapters,  unfolds as a layered journey through memory, mobility, and sonic intimacy:

  • Chapter I: 移(Movement) captures interview fragments from the COVID-19 period alongside the artist’s initial field recordings upon arriving in Hong Kong.
  • Chapter II: 探 (Explore) follows participants as they revisit familiar public spaces in their daily lives to record overlooked and intimate urban sounds.
  • Chapter III: 循 (Follow) documents the participants entering each other’s spaces, tracing overlapping auditory paths that reflect shared yet distinct urban experiences.
  • Chapter IV: 憧 (Longing) presents a poetic sonic composition that imagines future possibilities through reconstructed soundscapes shaped by memory, empathy, and imagination.

“移” was performed as a multichannel sound piece at the Multimedia Theatre of the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre in Hong Kong.
